With more and more people going online to buy practically everything, there’s no better time than now to get started with Internet Marketing!
In this overview, we’re going to cover the essentials of internet marketing. From what it is, to the best way to start out. By the end, you’re hopefully going to have a good understanding of what you should be doing next!
What is Internet Marketing?
At its core, Internet Marketing is a rather generalized term for a whole array of different avenues. That being said, it can be boiled down to the act of promoting something online with the goal of ultimately driving sales.
Whether you’re promoting your own product or business, or someone else’s, it’s internet marketing.
If you’re doing unboxing videos and generating sales from it, that’s internet marketing.
Producing concise reviews with charts and in-depth info that ultimately drives sales? Still internet marketing.
Simple enough, right?
With that out of the way…
Internet marketing is easily the best way to reach a huge audience quickly and continually, regardless of what you’re pitching. This is due to the vast amount of people that are more than likely searching for whatever you’re selling.
Think about this…
Did you know that the internet is used by a little over 2.4-billion people?
About 70% of those 2.4-billion people access the internet every single day.
Roughly 56% of that 70% use it for all means of shopping on a regular basis.
All of that shopping totals in a little over 3.2-billion searches (on search engines like Google, Bing, etc.) each day.
Of course, not all of those 3.2-billion+ daily searches will be for your particular product or service… BUT, a good chunk of them could be. Even 1% would be 32,0000,00 potential customers. 1% of that 1% would still be 320,000. That’s 320,000 pairs of eyes that your content could be in front of.
That’s the very essence of internet marketing. Getting your content into the hands of the people who are interested… And then giving them a reason to take action.
Pretty much anyone can get involved with internet marketing in one way or another. But, that doesn’t mean everyone is going to be successful. In fact, a very small portion of those who try IM will actually succeed at it.
It might seem counter-intuitive to say that, right? Well, not really.
Contrary to what you might have read elsewhere, internet marketing isn’t especially easy nor is it a way to “get rich quick”. It could take months, or even years before you see your first dollar generated online.
That’s exactly why so few people succeed.
It’s not that IM is intrinsically difficult or that everything is a scam, it’s that people simply give up before they’ve proven or disproven their idea. It might not even be your first idea that catches on, it might be the second or third.
That’s all to say, if you’re the kind of person who does not give up easily then internet marketing might be something you want to pursue.
Internet marketing can be done pretty much anywhere that exists online. You could write posts on your own website, you could focus your efforts on social media, you could make videos for platforms like YouTube, or you could do all of the above.
Where you do your internet marketing depends primarily on the most effective way to reach your target demographic.
Makes sense, right?
However, that poses another hurdle. Before you can determine where the best place to market to your target demographic, you have to first find out who that demographic is. AKA, who’s most likely to buy what you’re selling?… But that’s a topic for another post.
How is a good question, but it’s also a bunch of questions. We’ll focus on the 2 most common for now, “how do I start?” and “how do I make money?”
First, let’s address how you can make money with internet marketing.
One of the most common routes people take is a branch of IM called affiliate marketing. This is when you promote someone else’s product/services for a commission, sometimes recurring but more often it’s a 1-off payment. How you get paid depends on what you’re using, places like Amazon have direct deposit/check options where other networks might utilize PayPal or other methods.
Another way you could use internet marketing to drive some revenue is by promoting your own product/service. It doesn’t really matter what you make or do, you can use internet marketing to your advantage. This could be anything from understanding a sales funnel to drive more leads, or using different marketplaces to sell your own goods.
Now let’s look at how you can start out.
This part is different for everyone. Depending on the best medium to reach your target demographic, your first step might be setting up a website. Or your first step might be putting together social media and/or YouTube accounts.
But, before you do any of that, I would strongly suggest that you keep researching. The first steps you take will dictate how everything else will transpire moving forward.
Your “Why?” should be well-established before you set out on your internet marketing journey. You should have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish and achieve.
Based on personal experience, not having a concise idea of what you’re trying to achieve can cause a lot of headaches.
So, take some time to consider your goals. What do you want to gain from internet marketing?
At the end of the day, internet marketing isn’t for everyone. Don’t believe the hype when someone tells you it’s the easiest thing ever and you’ll be a millionaire “by Friday”. That’s only setting yourself up to be disappointed when it ends up taking 6-months to make $100.
It’s what you do after that 6-months that really matters. Do you get discouraged? Or, do you double down and realize that if you can make $100 in 6-months, you can make $1000 or $10000 or even $100000 in the same amount of time with more effort?
Most people take option A, about 98%. So, are you most people? If not, you might actually have a good chance of making money online.
