Want to learn how to get started with Internet Marketing? Great!
With more and more people going online to buy whatever they’re looking for, now is a really good time to get started with Internet Marketing.
What is Internet Marketing?
I guess I should address this right off the bat, for anyone who is brand new, or curious.
Internet marketing is actually a pretty general term for a whole bunch of concepts. Some of these concepts are scammy, yes.
But some of them are extremely legitimate and the recipes don’t involve an ounce of “scam”.
Internet Marketing is sometimes called Affiliate Marketing due to the fact that you’re marketing big name manufacturer’s products via affiliate programs.
Basically put, you pick a “niche”, build a website, and then talk about the products within that niche and provide links to the manufacturers site (or Amazon) so you can make a commission on any sales.
We’ll get more into the details of Internet Marketing further down, but hopefully you have a basic idea now.
Did you know that the internet is used by roughly 2.4 billion people?
70% of them access the internet on a daily basis. That is a lot of people online every day!
56% of those who access the internet on a daily basis use it for shopping!
Are you starting to see where I’m going with this? I hope so!
How about this… There are an average of 3.2 billion searches made, every day!
I hope I’ve piqued your interest, because we’re moving on to what Internet Marketing is all about!
Question #1: “Will I make money?”
Let’s get this question out of the way right now, because it’s always the most commonly asked.
If you work at it, you will make money.
No, it won’t be fast, and no it won’t be easy. But, it is possible.
The income possibilities of IM are basically limited to your own ambition and willingness to never stop learning.. and writing.
That said, some niches are just too competitive to really be successful in, especially if you’re fresh into the world of IM.
It’s honestly not the most complicated process, but it is definitely time consuming and has one heck of a learning curve. To be successful you will have to invest a large portion of whatever spare time you might currently have.
If you don’t have a lot of spare time, you can still be successful, it will just take significantly longer.
The 4 steps of Internet Marketing
- Pick a niche & build a website about it
- Constantly create high quality & optimized content (not all at once, but spread out over time)
- Monitor traffic and re-optimize
- Convert said Traffic into “Action Takers”
There are definitely other ways to break it down, but this is how I personally explain things.
Doing this by yourself is definitely possible, if you have had previous training on how to build a website and optimize it for search engines.
But, for those who haven’t received such training, you could seek out one of the numerous websites that offer to teach you their method to get started with Internet Marketing, for a monthly fee of course… This is pretty risky based on the fact that scams are everywhere.
There are definitely 1 or 2 good ones programs out there though, keep that in mind.
You could even attempt the trial and error way of doing things, ultimately wasting precious time which could be spent making money instead.
Watch for Scams
There are numerous websites out there like I mentioned before, offering to teach you how to get started with Internet Marketing.
The downside is that most of them really just want your money without providing you much of anything past the point of you paying.
A lot of these programs claim that they will teach you the ins and the outs of IM, but deep down they’re just pyramid schemes hidden behind false promises and dreams.
One such program like this – off of the top of my head – is Empower Network (EN); EN claims that they will make you thousands every month, but first you have to pay them thousands!
Not all hope is lost! There are a few hidden gems among the scams and bs!
Content is King
To get started with Internet Marketing and ultimately make money online, you’re going to need a lot of inspiration, a website/blog, and most importantly, a niche!
With a CMS like WordPress, SquareSpace, or Joomla, building websites couldn’t be easier. They perform a lot of the “behind the scenes” grunt work, and take away basically all requirement to know any form of code, making it a cinch to build beautiful websites in no time at all.
That all said, you could have all of the advanced website building technology in the world and the best looking site around, but without content of the same caliber all of that hard work goes to waste.
Being able to put out high quality content on a daily-basis is what will drive the majority of your traffic. Without this, you have nothing but a pretty background, and this is where a lot of beginners fall off.
You can’t just write 100 word paragraphs and expect to rank on the first page of Google either. Instead, you’re going to want to aim for closer to the 500-1500 word mark, or more.
Personally, I’ve found that posts over 1000 words generally rank much better than those under.
Motivation is Easier Lost Than Gained
The hardest part is keeping the drive and continually gaining momentum, consistency in your content is key.
Keeping the motivation to write that often is another story, which is why we pick something that is already of interest to us. It makes it easier to constantly write and learn about.
With a brand new website, you should be writing at least a post a day. Once you have built up a pretty decent base of traffic, you can slow your content publishing down to 3-4 a week.
Fresh and relevant content makes all the difference, and you will notice this when you stop publishing content consistently, as your traffic will also decrease.
Where to Learn
My absolute #1 recommendation for getting started in Internet Marketing is, and probably always will be, Wealthy Affiliate.
All I’m going to say is that they give you a completely free starter-account, so you can check it out for yourself pretty easy.
If you want to learn all there is about IM, that is definitely the place to start. I strongly recommend reading this review if you’re cautious like I am.
Internet marketing can be extremely lucrative, if done right. If done wrong, you can end up wasting hours upon hours of hard work.
Always remember to write high quality content focused on answering your reader’s questions, and make it consistent if you want to expand quicker.
Performing keyword research is essential to growth, and without it, you will have a much harder time gaining traffic, without sinking hundreds of dollars into ads that is.
Don’t lose motivation if you don’t see the growth you expect, if you give up too soon, you will never know if success was right around the corner. Always be persistent.
You could jump in blind, or you could get help from mentors who already have successful websites. No, I don’t mean some spammy Facebook group, I mean a professional business community like Wealthy Affiliate.
