Is there a best way to learn affiliate marketing? Or is it just one big scam? Well, I can guarantee you that it’s not the latter as long as you do things right, but that’s just my opinion. During my time in affiliate marketing I’ve had my fair share of failures, but I’ve also built a rather profitable online business following some relatively basic concepts.
How profitable? Well, it’s honestly not enough to make anyone rich, but it’s probably enough to really change things for just about anyone. How does $5000-$6500 USD /month sound after a year? I’m not saying you’ll be able to do that, because who knows, but that’s what I was able to accomplish and there’s really no reason why you can’t either. It’s not that it’s easy, just that it’s possible.
That sum didn’t magically appear overnight either, it took an entire year of slowly building up to that point starting from $11. The next month it was $50 and so on. I’ll show you a couple of graphs so you can see what I mean, these are the actual metrics from my one small niche site.
Like I said, it’s not enough to make anyone rich and it definitely did not happen overnight, but who in their right mind is going to turn away that kind of residual income? Keep in mind this is just one year, within another year that could potentially increase by 100% or more!
The “how” is all about taking action. I mean, without taking action you usually don’t get too far in anything. You can’t just wing it and hope for the best either, you really have to be doing things the right way the first time or you’ll end up wasting a lot of time, again, like almost anything.
So, how did I do it? I bet you’re thinking this is when I’m going to tell you that I have a secret formula that works like magic, right? Wrong! There’s no such thing as a “secret formula” when it comes to affiliate marketing, there’s a definitive way to do it wrong but no single way to do it right.
I know, it’s confusing, but you clearly want to be doing things the right way and that’s why you’re here.
What I did, was learn from people much smarter than I am. Crazy notion, right? Pretty much anyone who’s made it anywhere will tell you that they had to learn from someone with experience, someone who already knew the ropes so to say.
Affiliate marketing is really no different and 99.9% of anyone who just “wings it” without the proper knowledge will quickly fail.
Long story short, you have to learn from people who are already doing it.
Where to begin
Personally, I started my affiliate marketing journey over at Wealthy Affiliate and I think you should really check them out if you haven’t. Anyways, when I first joined WA back in 2013 I had absolutely no clue about anything affiliate marketing related. I had a bit of web design experience and some marketing knowledge, but never really considered affiliate marketing as a viable option.
Looking back, I can comfortably say that I essentially wasted almost 2-years, partly because I was arrogant, and partly because I just didn’t believe that it was possible. I fuddled around trying to do things “my way” instead of the way I was being taught, and that was a huge mistake.
Fast-forward to now, and I could very well do things “my way”, but that way has been so heavily influenced by what I learned over at Wealthy Affiliate that I would have a hard time even calling it “my way”. If we’re really being honest, it’s really their way of tackling affiliate marketing, and I’m not ashamed to admit that either.
So, if you haven’t gathered by now, you definitely want to start by finding somewhere with some kind of reputable training platform. How everything is presented at WA worked great for me, once I actually started to use it, but there are alternatives out there if you want something a little different. The main thing is to research anything and everything before finalizing any decisions!

Your other option is to just try and do it on your own by finding a host, installing a content management system like WordPress, and just winging it. But, I wouldn’t really recommend that route as I’ve basically been there and it doesn’t work out so well. Affiliate marketing is ultimately a simple concept, but it’s extremely tricky to do right in a constantly evolving environment like the internet.
Learning even the basics of affiliate marketing is going to take a lot of dedication, so if you’re not ready to dedicate yourself to this, I would really suggest turning away now. Otherwise, you’ll just end up wasting a whole bunch of your time that you could have dedicated on more productive efforts!
What does it take?
What does affiliate marketing take? Well, lots of hard work, late nights, headaches, a laptop/desktop and an internet connection. When you’re first getting into it, you’re probably going to be really excited and without a doubt mentally spending your money before you’ve even seen your first visitor – it’s something we all do 🙂 The trick is to reign that in for long enough to focus all of your efforts on learning everything you can while experimenting with different ways to implement what you’re learning. Like I said before, there’s not just “one way” to do affiliate marketing and you’ll have to find what works best for you and your niche.
Affiliate marketing is something that most people think takes a lot of technical know-how, and that’s kind of the truth, although not entirely accurate. It helps a lot to have a certain level of technical abilities, but it’s by no means essential to be an IT guru before jumping in. Most people who have been using computers for any length of time will likely have the basic skillset required, and from there it’s all about refining and expanding your abilities.
More than anything, what it takes to achieve success in affiliate marketing is the right training and attitude. You could spend all of your time on trial and error, or you could go check out somewhere like Affilorama or Wealthy Affiliate, it’s entirely up to you!
There are also tons of books related to the principals of marketing and the psychology behind it, I found that these helped me out a lot with overcoming the challenges of selling stuff. Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert B. Cialdini is one that I would definitely recommend reading!
At the end of the day, learning affiliate marketing is no easy task, but it’s not the hardest thing in the world either – it just has to be done right. Using the proper resources and taking advantage of different training materials will be the key to your success if this is something that you’re seriously considering. If you’re not ready to do those things, then you’re probably not ready to jump into affiliate marketing either.
These kinds of metrics are completely possible if you put in enough hard work. But, you’ll never know without trying it for yourself!
It all starts with the right training and the right attitude.
