Want to learn how to get started with Internet Marketing? Great!
With more and more people going online to buy whatever they’re looking for, now is a really good time to get started with Internet Marketing, lets go over some of the basics.
What is “Internet Marketing”?
I guess I should address this right off the bat, for anyone who is brand new, or curious.
Internet Marketing is a relatively general term for pretty much anything that involves selling other people’s stuff online (or your own, possibly). Internet Marketing can also be called Affiliate Marketing due to the fact that you’re marketing products via “affiliate programs”, in my opinion, these terms are interchangeable, but others might disagree.
You’re probably wondering if I actually make anything through internet marketing, right? If so, check out this post where I go over how I earn over $5k /month using a single niche site!
We’ll get more into the finer details of IM further down, but now you’ll have a basic idea.
Numbers are fun, right? No? Ok, fair enough… But you’ll like these ones!
Did you know that roughly 2.4-billion people have access to the internet and that 70% of them access it on a daily basis? That’s roughly 1.68-billion people online every day! 56% of those who access the internet on a daily basis use it for shopping, so that’s somewhere around 940-million people shopping online, every single day!
Are you starting to see where I’m going with this? I hope so!
How about this… There is an average of 3.2 billion searches made every day, a good portion of those searches are going to be for cute cat videos, but another good portion will be for reviews of products or information.
I hope I’ve piqued your interest because we’re moving on!
Where to Learn
I have a couple of recommendations on where to learn Internet Marketing, both are really great and both offer their own pros and cons.
My first recommendation is a site called Wealthy Affiliate. They have a really great community who supports each other and an awesome course setup which effectively teaches you how to do IM properly. They also have a completely free starter account which is great for beginners to learn the basics of affiliate marketing and it lets you get a taste of what they have to offer. If you want to learn more about these guys check out my Wealthy Affiliate review or click the pic below.
Second up is Affilorama, and they also have a really great community as well as an awesome course for teaching you IM & a free starter account. But, they have a slightly different setup to WA and charge quite a bit more.
Since both of these options offer free starter accounts, I would suggest trying them both out before deciding on one or the other.
There’s also the route of trying to learn this yourself, and for that, a number of forums are absolutely insane. Just type “internet marketing forum” into google and you’ll see what I mean. This is a pretty risky way to do things, and a lot of the information you’ll come by will either be outdated or what’s considered “black hat” – both will get you slapped by Google.
Question #1: “Will I make money?”
Let’s get this question out of the way right now, because it’s always the most commonly asked.
If you work at it, you will make money. But you have to believe that you will, or you wont. I know, it’s confusing, right? You’ll just have to take my word on that one.
No, it won’t be fast, and no, it won’t be easy. But, it is entirely 100% possible.
The income possibilities of IM are basically limited to your own ambition and willingness to never stop learning and writing. That said, some niches are just too competitive to be successful in without enormous amounts of work, especially if you’re fresh into the world of IM.
The most obscure ideas are the best ones to start with, and they can make money, believe it or not. You always want to go with the niche that you’re the most knowledgeable in, you’re already learning internet marketing so there’s no point in forcing yourself to learn a new niche at the same time!
Personally, I run a couple of niche sites (neither are this one), one of which earns me over $5k USD each and every month. In fact, in December 2016 it brought in just shy of $9000! I’m not saying this to gloat, but to show you that it is possible if you put in the effort and stick with it!
IM isn’t the most complicated process, but it is definitely time-consuming at the start, and it has one heck of a learning curve. To be successful, you will have to invest a large portion of whatever spare time you might currently have. If you don’t have a lot of spare time, you can still be successful, it will just take significantly longer.
Just be prepared for “hills and valleys”. You’ll know what I mean after a few months of running your own sites. Personally, it took me a long time before I ever even earned a dollar, let alone $9000 in a month.
The 4 steps of Internet Marketing – Super Simplified Edition
- Pick a niche & build a website about it
- Constantly create high quality & optimized content (not all at once, but spread out over time)
- Monitor traffic and re-optimize
- Convert said Traffic into “Action Takers”
There are definitely other ways to break it down, but this is how I like to explain the process to beginners. Doing this by yourself is definitely possible if you have had previous training on how to build a website and optimize it for Google.
But, for those who haven’t received such training, you could seek out one of the numerous websites that offer to teach you their method to get started with Internet Marketing, for a monthly fee of course… This is pretty risky based on the fact that scams are everywhere.
With that in mind, there’s definitely 1 or 2 good IM related programs out there, and we’ll talk about them further down.
You could even attempt the trial and error way of doing things, ultimately wasting precious time which could be spent making money instead. This is how I started out, and I really regret not taking the time to actually learn what it was that I was trying to do.
Watch for Scams
There are numerous websites out there like I mentioned before, offering to teach you how to get started with Internet Marketing. The downside is that most of them really just want your money without providing you any real value for your $.
A lot of these programs claim that they will teach you the ins and the outs of IM, but deep down they’re just pyramid schemes hidden behind false promises and dreams – trust me, I’ve been there.
One such program like this – off of the top of my head – is Empower Network (EN); EN claims that they will make you thousands every month, but first you have to pay them thousands!
As a general rule, if you’re being told that you can quickly make money online, you’re being lied to. Or, if you’re being told that it’s easy as pie, you’re being lied to. Or, if you’re being told that there is a 100% chance to make money, chances are, you’re being lied to. These are just some things to keep in mind because the IM industry is full of vultures.
Content is King
There’s a term “content is king” in IM, and it couldn’t be truer. Having consistent fresh content is going to get your website off of the ground, and into the realm of making money. But, you can’t just put out any old garbage article and expect it to rank, it has to hold value for your readers – because Google will know, Google always knows… 😮
With a CMS like WordPress, SquareSpace, or Joomla, building websites couldn’t be easier. They perform a lot of the “behind the scenes” grunt work and take away basically all requirement to know any form of code, making it a cinch to build beautiful websites in no time at all.
That all said, you could have all of the advanced website building technology in the world and the best-looking site around, but without properly optimized content of the same caliber, then all of that hard work goes to waste.
Being able to put out high-quality content on a daily basis is what will drive the majority of your traffic. Without this, you have nothing but a pretty background, and this is where a lot of beginners fall off – especially if you have nothing in your advertising budget for PPC ads.
You can’t just write 50-word post and expect to rank on the first page of Google either. Instead, your posts need to be at least 250 words, 500-1500 is even better, and they have to hold some kind of value.
Maintaining Your Motivation
The hardest part is keeping the drive and continually gaining momentum, consistency in your content is key.
Keeping the motivation to write that often is another story, which is why you have to pick something that is already interesting to you. This makes it way easier to constantly write and learn about.
With a brand new website, you should be writing at least a post a day for at least 1-month, maybe even 2 months. By then you should be getting some traffic through the search engines, and you can slow your posting down a bit, but it’s really better if you can maintain a post /day.
Internet marketing can be extremely lucrative if done right. But if done wrong, you’ll end up wasting hours upon hours of hard work and headaches.
Always remember to write high-quality content focused on answering your reader’s questions, and make it consistent if you want to expand quicker.
Performing keyword research is essential to growth, and without it, you will have a much harder time gaining traffic, without sinking hundreds of dollars into ads that are.
Don’t lose motivation if you don’t see the growth you expect, if you give up too soon, you will never know if success was right around the corner. Always be persistent.
You could jump in blind, or you could get help from mentors who already have successful websites. No, I don’t mean some spammy Facebook group, I mean a professional business community like Wealthy Affiliate.
